Murphy’s Laws of Combat

  1. You are not a superman.
  2. If it’s stupid but works, it isn’t stupid.
  3. Don’t look conspicuous, it draws fire. (This is why aircraft carriers are called, “Bomb Magnets”.)
  4. When in doubt, empty your magazine.
  5. Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are.
  6. Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
  7. If your attack is going really well, it’s an ambush.
  8. No plan survives the first contact intact.
  9. All five-second grenade fuses will burn down in three seconds.
  10. Try to look unimportant because the bad guys may be low on ammo.
  11. If you are forward of your position, the artillery will fall short.
  12. The enemy diversion you are ignoring is the main attack.
  13. The important things are always simple.
  14. The simple things are always hard.
  15. The easy way is always mined.
  16. If you are short of everything except enemy, you are in combat.
  17. When you have secured an area, don’t forget to tell the enemy.
  18. Incoming fire has the right of way.
  19. Friendly fire… isn’t.
  20. If the enemy is in range, SO ARE YOU!!!
  21. No combat ready unit has ever passed inspection.
  22. Beer math is: “Two beers times 37 men  = 49 cases.”
  23. Body count math is: “Two guerillas + one portable + two pigs = 37 enemy killed in action.”
  24. Things that must be together to work, usually can’t be shipped together.
  25. Radios will fail as soon as you need fire support desperately.
  26. Anything you do can get you shot… including doing nothing.
  27. Tracers work both ways.
  28. The only thing more accurate that incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.
  29. Make it tough for the enemy to get in and you can’t get out.
  30. If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will have more than your fair share of objectives to take.
  31. When both sides are convinced that they are about to lose, they are both right.
  32. Professional soldiers are predictable, but the world if full of amateurs.
  33. Murphy was a grunt.

The Skinny On Fat

The following article was copied from: http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/the-truth-about-fat and is in no way a work of my own.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The Truth About Fat (By Kathleen Doheny)

Everything you need to know about fat, including an explanation of which is worse — belly fat or thigh fat.

For most of us, body fat has a bad reputation. From the dimply stuff that plagues women’s thighs to the beer bellies that can pop out in middle-aged men, fat is typically something we agonize over, scorn, and try to exercise away.

But for scientists, fat is intriguing — and becoming more so every day. “Fat is one of the most fascinating organs out there,” says Aaron Cypess, MD, PhD, an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a research associate at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. “We are only now beginning to understand fat.”

“Fat has more functions in the body than we thought,” agrees Rachel Whitmer, PhD, research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Calif., who has studied the links between fat and brain health.

To get the skinny on fat, WebMD asked four experts on fat — who, not surprisingly, prefer not to be called fat experts — to fill us in.

Fat is known to have two main purposes, says Susan Fried, PhD, director of the Boston Obesity and Nutrition Research Center at Boston University and a long-time researcher in the field.

  • Fat stores excess calories in a safe way so you can mobilize the fat stores when you’re hungry.
  • Fat releases hormones that control metabolism.

But that’s the broad brushstroke picture. Read on for details about various types of fat — brown, white, subcutaneous, visceral, and belly fat.

Brown Fat

Brown fat has gotten a lot of buzz recently, with the discovery that it’s not the mostly worthless fat scientists had thought.

In recent studies, scientists have found that lean people tend to have more brown fat than overweight or obese people — and that when stimulated it can burn calories. Scientists are eyeing it as a potential obesity treatment if they can figure out a way to increase a person’s brown fat or stimulate existing brown fat.

It’s known that children have more brown fat than adults, and it’s what helps them keep warm. Brown fat stores decline in adults but still help with warmth. “We’ve shown brown fat is more active in people in Boston in colder months,” Cypess says, leading to the idea of sleeping in chillier rooms to burn a few more calories.

Brown fat is now thought to be more like muscle than like white fat. When activated, brown fat burns white fat.

Although leaner adults have more brown fat than heavier people, even their brown fat cells are greatly outnumbered by white fat cells. “A 150-pound person might have 20 or 30 pounds of fat,” Cypess says. “They are only going to have 2 or 3 ounces of brown fat.”

But that 2 ounces, he says, if maximally stimulated, could burn off 300 to 500 calories a day — enough to lose up to a pound in a week.

“You might give people a drug that increases brown fat,” he says. “We’re working on one.”

But even if the drug to stimulate brown fat pans out, Cypess warns, it won’t be a cure-all for weight issues. It may, however, help a person achieve more weight losscombined with a sound diet and exercise regimen.

White Fat

White fat is much more plentiful than brown, experts agree. The job of white fat is to store energy and produce hormones that are then secreted into the bloodstream.

Small fat cells produce a “good guy” hormone called adiponectin, which makes theliver and muscles sensitive to the hormone insulin, in the process making us less susceptible to diabetes and heart disease.

When people become fat, the production of adiponectin slows down or shuts down, setting them up for disease, according to Fried and others.

Subcutaneous Fat

Subcutaneous fat is found directly under the skin. It’s the fat that’s measured using skin-fold calipers to estimate your total body fat.

In terms of overall health, subcutaneous fat in the thighs and buttocks, for instance, may not be as bad and may have some potential benefits, says Cypess. “It may not cause as many problems” as other types of fat, specifically the deeper, visceral fat, he says.

But subcutaneous fat cells on the belly may be another story, says Fried. There’s emerging evidence that the danger of big bellies lies not only in the deep visceral fat but also the subcutaneous fat.

Visceral Fat

Visceral or “deep” fat wraps around the inner organs and spells trouble for your health. How do you know if you have it? “If you have a large waist or belly, of course you have visceral fat,” Whitmer says. Visceral fat drives up your risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and even dementia.

Visceral fat is thought to play a larger role in insulin resistance — which boosts risk of diabetes — than other fat, Whitmer tells WebMD. It’s not clear why, but it could explain or partially explain why visceral fat is a health risk.

Whitmer investigated the link between visceral fat and dementia. In a study, she evaluated the records of more than 6,500 members of Kaiser Permanente of Northern California, a large health maintenance organization, for an average of 36 years, from the time they were in their 40s until they were in their 70s.

The records included details on height, weight, and belly diameter — a reflection of the amount of visceral fat. Those with the biggest bellies had a higher risk of dementia than those with smaller bellies. The link was true even for people with excess belly fat but overall of normal weight.

She doesn’t know why belly fat and dementia are linked, but speculates that substances such as leptin, a hormone released by the belly fat, may have some adverse effect on the brain. Leptin plays a role in appetite regulation but also in learning and memory.

Belly Fat

Belly fat has gotten a mostly deserved reputation as an unhealthy fat. “Understand that belly fat is both visceral and subcutaneous,” says Kristen Gill Hairston, MD, MPH, an assistant professor of medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C. “We don’t have a perfect way yet to determine which [of belly fat] is subcutaneous or visceral, except by CT scan, but that’s not cost-effective.”

But if you’ve got an oversize belly, figuring out how much is visceral and how much is subcutaneous isn’t as important as recognizing a big belly is unhealthy, she says. How big is too big? Women with a waist circumference more than 35 inches and men with a waist circumference more than 40 inches are at increased disease risk.

Abdominal fat is viewed as a bigger health risk than hip or thigh fat, Whitmer and other experts say.  And that could mean having a worse effect on insulin resistance, boosting the risk of diabetes, and a worse effect on blood lipids, boosting heart andstroke risks.

Thigh Fat, Buttocks Fat

While men tend to accumulate fat in the belly, it’s no secret women, especially if “pear-shaped,” accumulate it in their thighs and buttocks.

Unsightliness aside, emerging evidence suggests that pear-shaped women are protected from metabolic disease compared to big-bellied people, says Fried.

“Thigh fat and butt fat might be good,” she says, referring to that area’s stores of subcutaneous fat. But the benefit of women being pear shaped may stop at menopause, when women tend to deposit more fat in the abdomen.

Weight Loss and Fat Loss

So when you lose weight, what kind or kinds of fat do you shed? “You’re losing white fat,” Fried tells WebMD. “People tend to lose evenly all over.”

The results change a bit, however, if you add workouts to your calorie reduction, she says. “If you exercise plus diet you will tend to lose slightly more visceral fat from your belly.”

“We’re at an exciting point in science,” says Whitmer, echoing the input from other scientists in the field.

Whitmer and others expect more discoveries about fat of all types to be made in the near future.

Take Responsibility For Your Life

Take in consideration that this post is not for everyone and should be understood that this is aimed at those who are constantly complaining needlessly about their life.

I am getting tired of people in this day in age complaining constantly about how bad their life is. First off let me say this… It doesn’t matter where in this world you live or what your current conditions in life are, you must first take responsibility for your life. Until you do that, you will never be able to rise above what ever adversity you face.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are those exceptions where you find people that are facing illnesses, be it terminal or not, or natural disasters and such, but this is not for them so much as it is for all those people I see or hear constantly complaining needlessly about how bad their life is, or how crappy their job is, or that they can’t find “true love” or that they aren’t happy in their relationship. Remember this: Your life is what you have made it through the decisions you either made or failed to make.

I have heard entirely too much complaining lately. I understand that life is tough and you don’t always get the breaks you deserve, need or want, but there are two basic types of people in this world; those who allow the hard times to beat and keep them down or those who see the hard times as an opportunity to better themselves, learn from it and come back smarter and stronger than before. The question you have to ask yourself is which one are you?

With everything in life worth while, it takes hard work, dedication and determination to reach a goal. Unfortunately not everyone has those traits and the majority of people live their life in the safe zone doing the things that come easy and rarely ever taking a chance. If you look around at those who you admire, idolize and aspire to be like, keep in mind that they have achieved success while walking a long hard road.

If you look around at your life and you are in a job that you hate and you wake up every morning dreading the work week, you have only you to thank. This is America, the land of opportunity where anyone can be anything. It is never too late and never too hard. It’s up to you to be the person that you want to be and do what you want to do. It’s not always easy and it rarely ever happens over night, but it comes down to how badly do you want it? Do you have what it takes to be the best, the top dog or the most famous? Maybe, none of that inspires you, maybe you’re just scared about making a career change and feel trapped because you have bills, family and other obligations to meet. Either way, you make a choice everyday to stay where you are or better your situation. Remember, it’s a choice to do nothing. And if you make that choice, you have no one to blame but yourself. You are creating your life and your legacy. I personally have chosen to chase my dreams and regardless of whether I am financially well off or not, I would rather be happy doing what I do than hating my job everyday and be rich. Fortunately for me, I can have both if I wish, it’s up to me. Happiness is created and never given to you by anyone. No one can make you happy; you create and find your own happiness regardless what those around you.

Success is not always about money or popularity; it can also be referred to in relationship terms as well. We don’t often find “successful” relationships too much anymore, but they are out there. A successful relationship is not one where they are happy all the time, but rather one where two partners are willing to communicate, compromise and trust each other as well as walk hand in hand with love, commitment and understanding. If you find yourself complaining about how you can’t find love, you might want to consider the following:

-          Are you the type of person that others enjoy being around?

-         Are you a pleasant person with a good attitude?

-         Where are you looking for a partner?

-         Are your standards too high?

-         Do you tend to push others away when times get tough?

-         How do you handle stress and hardships?

-         How has it affected others in the past?

Well maybe you should consider who you are as a person and the baggage that you bring with you into a relationship before you think about adding another person to your life. Sometimes we have such a scared past with either past relationships or our parents growing up that we are desperately searching to fill the void of what we have missed and want so bad. Problem with that is that sometimes we create the very thing that we don’t want.

Here are a couple of tips that I can give you:

-          Be yourself and be happy with who you are. If you want to change certain things about you, then do so for yourself and not others.

-         Be honest with who you are and your own strengths and weaknesses. If you decided to be in a relationship then you can expect problems in those areas, so don’t be surprised when they come.

-         Get rid of your “standards” and open your eyes, heart and mind to who the person is rather than what they look like. If you decided to get into a long term relationship/marriage, do you want to be with someone who looks good but drives you nuts or someone that you have a great time with? Not to say that you can’t have both… I’m just saying.

-         If you have a messed up childhood or previous relationships that are still haunting you, fix that in yourself before trying to add another person to the mix. Sometimes it’s better to say single than cause more confusion in your life.

In conclusion, just remember that your situation, no matter what it is, can always get worse, but the flip side to that coin is that it can always get better as well. No matter how bad it seems right now, you have a choice to make and doing nothing is still making a choice. So remember before you get on Facebook, MySpace or Twitter and post how much you hate your life, how bad boys or girls suck or how much you hate your job, you have only you to thank for that. Somewhere along the line you had control, so take it back and choose your fate.

Leaving Jean Jacques Machado?

For those of you who don’t already know and or are wondering why I decided to leave the Jean Jacques Machado academy, please understand it was something that I had to do. Regardless of what you may think or what you have heard keep in mind that there are always more than one side to a story. It was the right thing for me to do. I mean no disrespect to Professor Jean Jacques or anyone else. I hold Jean Jacques Machado in the highest of respect and I only wish that things could have worked out better between the two of us. He is an amazing teacher… the best I’ve ever seen. He has taught me so much and I will always be thankful for the time and help that he gave to me. I am going to miss all of my training partners. Thank you for helping me get to where I am today. I hope that one day we will meet again on the mats. Thank you for your support and understanding.

I am currently looking for another academy and think that I might have found it at Checkmat (Upland/La Habra). I’ll keep you updated as I find out more. Take care and I’ll see you all soon at the next competition. Fight Hard!

What the heck is he on?

I get a lot of questions as to what I am taking that allows me to continue the rigorous training regimen that I do on a daily basis. More often than not most people just assume that I am taking some sort of HGH (human growth hormone) or anabolic steroid. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I have worked very hard to get to where I am at and have spent over 12 years researching and working out to many different training programs. I am still learning and constantly evolving. There are many great programs out there but regardless of which one you choose to do there are several factors that will come into play that will help you to get them most out of it.

First and foremost is patience. You must be patient when starting a new training program. Give your body time to adapt to the program and for the results to show. No matter what you do or supplements you take, it is going to take time. One of the worst pitfalls is that of impatience. You can cause injury to your body or even worst get pressured into turning to illegal substances. You can only push your body so hard and can only lift so much. Please don’t be one of those people that we all see in the gym lifting weights that are clearly too heavy for them. Push yourself hard but be smart enough to know your limitations. Use proper form and progressions.

Listen to your body and learn what is just hurting or truly injured. If you continue to train with injuries, keep in mind that you could potentially be causing further irreversible damage and though it might seem like the tough thing to do, the best thing is to let it heal properly. If at all possible, work on areas that you are weaker at while you heal. This will still allow you to train body and mind and still heal up.

Hard work , dedication, self motivation and heart are just a few of the attributes that are an integral part of a real fighter. Without these you will never be able to achieve simple goals… not to mention extraordinary feats of human ability. The will of man can and will open the door to almost any dream so long as the heart is willing to forgo the adversity to come. You must be willing to sacrifice yourself to your love and passion. The moment that you loose that fire you will start to become complacent and fade to the back while giving opportunity for others to replace you. A fighter will never quit… he will go and go until he can go no more. It’s an driven instinct not something learned.

Finally, the ability to learn and constantly evolve. If you see that your current training program isn’t giving you the results that you are looking for, it’s time to change it up. Start so shock your body and do something different. Never allow yourself to be one dimensional. Learn new ways to push yourself to new limits. Education is the key to becoming more successful in anything that you do.

Now with that in mind, lets discuss a taboo subject; The use of anabolic steroids and HGH in the professional sports circuit. More often than not you will find that those who use illegal substances to enhance their performance are not only weak minded but are also causing irreversible damage to their bodies. The reason that I say this is that even though the use of these substances are very well documented as well as the long lasting damage that they do, any person that feels that they must give themselves an unfair advantage to win is weak minded. They don’t trust their own abilities, training and experience. I have found in the combat sports community, more and more professional athletes are using these illegal enhancements and are blinded by its quick results. Don’t get sucked into the lie. I am a firm believer in achieving your goals as naturally as possible.

With that being said, here is a list of supplements that I am personally taking. Keep in mind that everybody is different and so are your individual needs. I am in no way pushing or advertising for anyone. I am just trying to answer a common question asked.

- Morning Shake: Apple juice, Vitamineral Green (http://www.healthforce.com/), and 1 scoop of fiber.

- Multi-Vitamin: Max for Men (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/country/max.html)

- Joint Support: Animal Flex (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/univ/flex.html), Bluebonnet Nutrition Omega-3 (http://www.iherb.com/natural-omega-3-1000-mg-180-softgels/11821?at=0), Cissus (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/prima/cis.html)

- Reconvery: GlutaPure (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/un/glut.html), Recoverite (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/ham/rec.html)

- Protien: New Whey Liquid Protien 25 grams (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/ids/new.html)

- Muscle Growth: 17HD (http://www.netnutri.com/browse.cfm/4,2383.html), Viraloid (http://www.netnutri.com/browse.cfm/4,2382.html), ZMA (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/prima/zma.html), Beta Alanine (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/prima/betaalanine.html)

- Energy: 5 Hour Energy (http://www.5hourenergy.com/?gclid=CNOXjLjJoZ4CFRHyDAod3GVBnw)

- 1 Baby Asprin a day (http://www.wonderdrug.com/products/ar/ar_als81.htm)

I do not recommend that anyone start taking any supplements without first consulting your physician. It is important to understand that as the need arises that you then answer its call. Don’t just assume that you need to take anything without truly needed it or before knowing what it is for to begin with. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a miracle drug nor is there any substitute for hard work; that is the best supplement that you can take. So achieve your peak naturally then if you need help to get to the next level or if you need a better recovery plan, then look into what you need. Try to get the most out of your diet and real foods.

I hope that this has helped you out. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Cutting & Making Weight

There are a lot of fighters out there that don’t know how to properly cut weight. I see so many jiu-jitsu guys sweating it out just minutes before their matches and MMA guys worn out before they even step in the cage. So I hope that this will shed some light on proper weight cutting techniques.

First off, combat sports requires tremendous physical conditioning, mental toughness, skill and heart. Most fighters lack one or more of these components and this is the main reason that you see such a lack in discipline and work ethic. Most don’t care enough to push the extra mile but every one wants to be the best?! I don’t get it. So with that said, I hope that this helps out anyone having issues or questions with cutting weight.

First off, cutting weight for jiu-jitsu tournaments is completely different than cutting weight for a MMA fight. Most major Jiu-Jitsu tournaments hold their weigh-ins prior to the first match whereas MMA fights do their weigh-ins the day before.

Either way, the easiest way to ensure an easy cut is to maintain a weight no more than 5% over your target weight class. For example; if you plan on fighting at 155, you should try to maintain no more than 163 lbs. Stay in the gym and this will guarantees that the weight cut will be fairly easy. It is important not to let yourself go even after a fight.

The train of thought is that when you cut weight you gain an advantage over your smaller and weaker opponent, but keep in mind that what you gain in size you could possibly loose in strength and conditioning if the cut is too large. We’ve all seen fighters who cut too much and ran out of gas right away. Don’t let that be you. Be smart and plan to compete or fight as close to your normal weight as you can. It’s better to be at optimal strength and fully hydrated for a fight than deal with the cut and fight.

Making Weight for Jiu-Jitsu Tournaments:
Since most major tournaments hold their weigh-ins right before your first match and you must weigh in with your gi on, you have to be smart about cutting weight. I would suggest not to cut at all and just compete at your normal weight. Since there is no time for recovery and your energy is very important… this would be the best option.

For those of us that are right on the border of our weight class and the gi puts us at the bottom of the next highest bracket, we like to cut a little weight. Keep in mind that you want to be able to hydrate and eat the day of the match.
Don’t ever compete on an empty stomach!

Just follow these simple guidelines:
- Get an accurate scale and weight yourself with your gi and belt.
- Determine how much weight you must loose in order to make weight.
- Plan for 3-4 lbs of food and water consumption on the day of the match.
- Use a food scale to accurately weigh all food and water on the day of your match to ensure that you don’t go over weight.

Start your cut at least a week or so out. You should be conditioning and doing regular cardio routines anyway, so it should not take you that long. Drinking distilled water helps to cut water weight without having to wear sweat suits or sit in the sauna, but starting drinking regular water at least a day or two before your tournament.

Your nutrition also plays a big role in cutting weight. Your diet should be very lean… meaning no oils, sugars, bad carbs, or red meats. Sick with food as organic as possible and lean meats such as 99% fat free turkey, skinless white meat chicken, egg whites, and fish. You need to continue to consume carbs as well. Just stay away from all the extras that you stick on the carbs such as butter, sour cream, sugar, and cheese.

Other than that the rest is pretty simple to figure out. Just don’t over do it. Everything in moderation is best.

Making Weight for MMA Fights:

Mostly, the same applies as above but there are some major differences. Since you have roughly 24 hours to recover and rehydrate, take advantage of this. Start to cut about a month to a month and a half out; depending on how your body reacts. You will notice a slight decrease in strength, this is the time to get used to the cut and work through the fatigue.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to practice your cut during your training phase prior to the fight. This will help to acclimate your body to the cut if you are not already used to it. Drop the weight and put it back on in the 24 hour period provided. This way when it’s time to drop the weight for real you’re ready and your body knows what to do.

It’s important to maintain a clean diet and follow a strict training routine. Don’t ever do it and try to cut too much weight or too close to a fight. You will burn out.

Sweatsuits and sauna’s are not bad when needed, I’m just saying when you are taking care of yourself by giving your body enough time to do what you need it to do and you are feeding it clean fuel to burn, it will respond better.

I hope that this helps some of you out there. Let me know.

The calm after the storm…

This past weekend I competed in the American Nationals that the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation put on and it was in my mind a complete success. I placed third and for that I am pleased. I gave it my all and for that I am happy. After looking back at the footage there are a number of things that I wish I could go back and redo but that is where the learning process keeps me constantly evolving. I was very pleased with my performance and will do better at the next event.

There were 9 competitors in my weight bracket which meant that the most matches I would get would be 3. So my first match was against Felipe Guedes (Gracie Barra San Clemente). He and I had fought before at South Bay 2008 and he won by points. So as you can imagine I really wanted to ensure that this rematch was in my favor. We had a great back and forth battle and it was truly an honor to have competed against him, but this time it was my day and I pulled off the win.

My second match was against Ernani Assuncao (Renzo Gracie). He was a very strong fighter and gave me true test of my skills. His base and balance were one of his biggest attributes and ultimately insured him the win. I attempted a flying triangle, an arm bar and a couple of sweeps to no avail. I look forward to a rematch with him one day and I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

The final standings in the Masters Purple belt division:

1st: Steven Cardenas
2nd: Ernani Assuncao
3rd: Sergio Machado

I am going back to the drawing board and will come back stronger at the NAGA tournament in Las Vegas on the 26th. I would like to thank everyone that supports me in my dream to becoming a world champion and also would like to thank my sponsors for their continual support of my full time tournament schedule.
